RUMFORD — With heavy hearts, we announce that Alfred G. Shorey, 91, a longtime resident of Rumford, passed away Monday, March 20, at Rumford Hospital surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Rumford on May 11, 1925, Fred was the son of Lillian and Alfred George Shorey Sr. He was educated in local schools. Fred proudly served in the U.S. Navy during World War II for three years. Fred earned the World War II victory medal, American Area Ribbon and European African Middle Eastern Area Ribbon for his service.
Once he returned home from World War II, Fred went to work at Boise Cascade, where he remained for 44 years. Fred managed several hundred employees while at Boise. After his retirement, Fred was personally asked by the mill manager to guide tours in the Rumford mill. He enlightened and educated people on the mill’s inner workings for years.
Fred’s greatest pride and joy was his family. Fred married his childhood sweetheart and love of his life, Eva Soubble, on Oct. 5, 1946, and they enjoyed more than 70 wonderful years together. Fred and Eva raised four children, whom he loved dearly. He phoned and visited with them almost daily. Fred was extremely close to his grandchildren and could talk with them about anything. Throughout their lives, Fred passionately followed his children and grandchildren’s activities and especially loved watching them play sports.
Fred loved the outdoors and could often be found in his woodshed creating crafts for the whole family to enjoy. Fred learned how to ski at 67 years old and developed a passion for gliding down the slopes at Sunday River. Also after his retirement, he and Eva discovered the joy of golf and spent many summers playing at Oakdale Country Club. Fred had a wonderful sense of humor and could make anybody laugh. He was laughing and joking with his family until his very last day. Fred will be greatly missed by many people.
Fred is survived by his loving wife, Eva; four children, Thomas Shorey and wife, Hope, of China, Linda Dupill of Peru, Katie Kelly and husband, Tom, of Cumberland, and Andrew Shorey and wife, Diane, of Peru; seven grandchildren, Missy, Tara, and TJ Shorey, Emily and Natalie Dupill, Kasey LeClerc, and Andrew Shorey Jr.; his brother, Francis and wife, Connie; and eight great-grandchildren.
Fred was predeceased by his parents; sisters, Viola Blouin and June Spencer; and son-in-law, Robert Dupill Jr.
The family wishes to thank the staffs of Central Maine Medical Center, Rumford Hospital and the Rumford Community Home for their kindness and compassion in attending to Fred’s care.
