In between their important slalom runs at the U.S. Alpine Championships, the Bates College skiers competing at Sugarloaf … went skiing.

“It’s been great,” Bobcats junior Hannah Johnson said.

Bates was well-represented at the U.S. Alpine Championships with five skiers competing: Johnson, Kelsey Chenoweth, Sierra Ryder, Brielle Antonelli and Michael Cooper.

“It almost feels like a college race because you’re surrounded by your team,” Johnson said.

Johnson and Chenoweth competed all four days. Johnson placed 17th the slalom and 27th in the super-G.

Chenoweth was the first skier in the first event of U.S. Nationals, the women’s super-G, in which she placed 23rd. She received disqualifications in the slalom and the giant slalom.

Ryder took 21st in the slalom, but lost a ski during her first giant slalom run, so she received a DNF (did not finish).

Antonelli was one of the few to survive both runs of the women’s giant slalom Monday and came in 24th. She also took 34th in the slalom.

Cooper did not finish his first run in the men’s slalom Sunday. He starts 42nd in Tuesday’s giant slalom.

Crews are back

The Bates men’s and women’s rowing teams opened their seasons at the 35th annual Murphy Cup in Philadelphia over the weekend.

The women’s varsity eight finished eighth in the petite final. The Bobcats rowed to a third-place finish, but an interference call pushed them back two spots. Drexel won the petite final and Northeastern claimed the grand final.

The men’s varsity eight claimed sixth out of 22 boats, all from school’s larger than Bates.

Big wins

Bates’ men’s lacrosse team remained unbeaten with a 17-11 win over Williams College on the road Saturday. The Bobcats were led by Charlie Fay’s career-high-tying six goals.

The Bates women also earned a big victory over Williams on Saturday, beating the Ephs 8-7 in overtime.

The Bobcats rallied back from a 6-3 deficit with 16 minutes remaining in regulation. They tied the game at 6-6 with 4:51 remaining, and then forced overtime when Liv Sandford made a steal at midfield and passed ahead to Avery MacMullen, who scored on an open next with 4.3 seconds remaining.

With 2:48 remaining in the extra frame, Bates’ Allison Dewey scored the game-winner after picking up a loose ball at midfield.
