RUMFORD — The Rumford Water District board of trustees will meet Wednesday to respond to issues raised by the citizen group, Protect Rumford Water Alliance.

The 4 p.m. meeting will be in the Rumford Falls Auditorium.

“We’re addressing our finance condition, our financial management,” district Superintendent Brian Gagnon said. “We’ll be discussing the infrastructure conditions and future costs.”

He said those issues are being addressed because of comments from Len Greaney of the Protect Rumford Water Alliance.

“We’re going to address it to set the record straight on the district’s financial condition and what I regard as a smear campaign against the Water District,” Gagnon said.

He said they will also be discussing the proposed water extraction ordinance, developed by the Water District.

The 11-page document notes that the purpose of the ordinance is “to protect the quality and quantity of ground water located wholly or partially in Rumford, to insure that any large-scale water extraction is subjected to prior review and approval so as to establish the ongoing sustainability and quality of water supplies.

Gagnon said trustees will meet Wednesday, May 31, and post draft contracts to sell water to Poland Spring and hold a public meeting on the proposed terms. The 4 p.m. meeting will take place in the Rumford Falls Auditorium.

Gagnon said trustees will post the contracts for 30 days and hold a second public meeting. Trustees will wait at least 30 days before taking any action.
