EXETER, N.H. – Donald H. Kenney, 89, died July 2, at Riverwood, Exeter, N.H.
He was born Dec. 12, 1915, in Dover-Foxcroft, the son of Iva Nuite and Herbert Kenney. He was raised in Wilton, worked his way through Wilton Academy and was the first member of his family to attend college.
He married Louise “Sue” Russell, also of Wilton, in 1938.
Following several years in the Signal Corps, he served in the Navy during World War II. He was employed as a radio and television engineer, living in Auburn. He worked for WLAM, WMTW and WCBB.
He and Sue, and their family, were active in the Sixth Street Congregational Church. After their retirement, they moved to East Sullivan where they built their retirement home.
He was an avid skier, camper, hiker and canoeist. He realized a lifelong dream of sailing Frenchman Bay in his sailboat, Allegra.
He served the community as a member of the Sullivan Planning Board, the Sullivan Conservation Committee and the Sullivan-Sorrento Historical Society. He was active in the Democratic party and was a candidate for the Maine Legislature.
Following Louise’s death in 1991, he married Frances Mottram, of Hancock, who shared his love of outdoor activities. He and Frances moved to Riverwood, a retirement community in Exeter, N.H., in 1997, but continued an active life – canoeing the Allagash, and hiking and camping until shortly before his death.
He is survived by his wife, Frances, of Exeter, N.H.; his brother, Lloyd of Farmington; his daughter, Katharine Wilkins of Ellsworth, and her spouse, Diana Cate; Katharine’s sons, Stanley N. Marshall III, of San Jose, Calif., Andrew W. Marshall his wife, Renee, and their son, Grifin of East Holden; Arthur’s daughter, Heidi; his foster son, Michael Danforth; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his son, Arthur; his sister, Maxine Melendy; and his brother, Richard.
