GRAY (AP) – A stormy summer day that spawned tornadoes has set a record for Maine.
The National Weather Service confirmed Wednesday that a fifth tornado touched down Saturday; that breaks the old record of four tornadoes, on July 21, 2010.
Officials say tornadoes were confirmed in the towns of Denmark, Bridgton and Otisfield and on Moose Pond and Sebago Lake. The strong winds caused damage to the Shawnee Peak ski areas, an RV campground, and homes on several lakes and ponds.
Four of the tornadoes were categorized as F1, with winds of 73 to 112 mph. One of them was an F0 with winds of 40 to 72 mph.
Meteorologist Eric Schwibs said Maine tends to be spared from stronger tornadoes that sometimes strike the South and Midwest.
