SCARBOROUGH  — Janice “Jan” M. Searway, 72, of Cumberland Foreside died peacefully on Thursday, July 13, surrounded by family.

She was born in Houlton on Dec. 10, 1944, the daughter of Harvey Harbison Jr. and Doris Mae Currie Harbison. Jan graduated from Houlton High School in 1963 and attended Mount Ida Junior College and Ricker College. She married her husband, Scott, in 1966 shortly after his graduation from the Maine Maritime Academy.

Jan was known as a kind and gentle woman who always saw the best in others. She had many close, long-standing friendships and was truly full of grace.

Throughout her adult life Jan lived in Auburn, Cumberland Foreside and Naples, Fla. She formed beautiful and deep relationships that she treasured. Her greatest pride and joy was found in her grandchildren and creating special memories with them during summers at their family home on Chebeague Island.

She was a long-standing supporter of the Ronald McDonald House in Portland. A lifelong Episcopalian, she served on the Vestry at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church in Auburn and was actively involved at the Episcopal Church of St. Mary in Falmouth.

She is survived by her husband, Scott and their three daughters, Ellen Silver (Andrew) of North Potomac, Md., Linda Gervais (Joseph) of Portland and Sarah Ledbury (Stephen) of Needham, Mass.; and seven grandchildren, Owen, Eliza, Alexandra, Mia, Thomas, Megan and Matthew. Also surviving are her mother, Doris; sister, June Harbison; and several close nephews and a niece.

She was predeceased by her father, Harvey in 1954.

The family would like to thank Dr. John Love MD, Dr. James Zeitlin MD, and the Gosnell Memorial Hospice center for their loving and compassionate care.
