MONMOUTH – Darrell E. Briggs, 91, a resident of Auburn, died Sunday, May 29, in South Monmouth of complications resulting from cirrhosis and cancer of the liver.

He was born on April 11, 1914, in Kingman, one of 19 children of Soloman and Lottie (Hatch) Briggs. He attended elementary school there, quitting at an early age to help support the family.

He worked for many years as a lumberjack and was employed by several sawmills. He retired from a career with the city of Auburn Highway Department and then worked part-time for Maine Metal Recycling Co. until he was in his 80s. He supplemented his income by spending vacations working at seasonal jobs tending vegetable gardens in Durham and picking apples on Perkins Ridge in Auburn.

His employers were awed by his tenacity and productivity. His co-workers were humbled by his calm demeanor and politeness.

He married the former Elsie J. Chabot in Lewiston on Aug. 27, 1939. During nearly 66 years of married life, they resided in Kingman, Lewiston, Turner, and spent over 50 years at their West Dartmouth Street home in Auburn.

He is survived by his wife, Elsie; a son, John; daughters, Rita, Irene, Jeanette, and Beatrice; numerous grand and great-grandchildren; two brothers, Eddie and Lauris; and three sisters, Gertrude, Anna, and Lucinda.
