Owen Kennedy
takes audience on
musical journey

WINTHROP — Celebrate the many voices of the violin with Maine fiddler and violinist Owen Kennedy, as he performs “From Fiddle to Classical & Back Again” on at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 9, at the Winthrop United Methodist Church, 58 Main St.

The program will feature maritime and Celtic fiddling, briefly head back to the late Baroque period, move forward with classical music that borrows traditional melodies, and then return to fiddling from Quebec and New England.

Ellen Gawler will be up on stage with kennedy for a few sets, as will Don Cunningham and Cindy Larock of the Maine Folque Co-op. The accomplished pianist Chiharu Naruse will accompany Kennedy for the Fiocco Allegro and Vittorio Monti’s Czardas. Madelyn Kennedy, Owen’s sister, will perform a selection of Bartok’s Romanian Folk Dances.

Suggested minimum donations of $5 for adults or $15 for a family are appreciated. Ten percent of the show’s proceeds will go to the WUMC mission for Nicaraguan school children to help the children of Winthrop’s sister church in Sabana Grande attend school.

Parking is available on the street or at the church parking lots on either side of the church, with additional parking at the town parking lot by the post office. Light refreshments will be served after the performance.
