Juanita Wade, top left, explains to an unidentified Lewiston police officer how she had to jump out of the way to avoid being hit by the vehicle shown on Bates Street on Sunday afternoon. According to Wade, the vehicle was “flying across the parking lot” and across Bates Street before driving over the curb onto the sidewalk where she was walking. Franklin James of Randolph, 27, was in the driver’s seat but was unconscious, according to Lewiston Police Lt. Kelly Hamel. Responders on scene had to break open a window to get him out of the vehicle, at which point he regained full consciousness and walked to an ambulance, which took him to a local hospital for treatment. His 2011 Ford Focus received front-end damage. The crash is still under investigation.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
