OXFORD — An investigation is underway into a weekend accident that sent two people to local hospitals when an Oxford Casino shuttle and a car collided on Route 26. 

Police Chief Jonathan Tibbetts said Monday two people were injured when the shuttle, a 2010 Ford E-350, and a 2010 Ford Fusion sedan collided at 11:55 a.m. Saturday, sending both vehicles off the roadway.

The shuttle is used to transport guests from the Hampton Inn, located directly across the street, to the casino and back.

According to Tibbetts, Frank Clement, 70, of Mechanic Falls, the driver of the shuttle, was taken to Central Maine Medical Center with a possible neck injury.

Peter Rainey, 71 , of Otisfield, the driver of the car, was taken to Stephens Memorial Hospital with a leg laceration and complaints of chest pain.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation, said Tibbetts.

Poland rescue and PACE assisted at the scene along with the Commercial Motor Vehicle unit of the Maine State Police.

This is the second serious accident in the past few weeks at the intersection, which has a northbound left turning lane and a blinking yellow light.

On July 25, two men were killed when they tried to cross the intersection from the Oxford Casino to the Hampton Inn where they were staying and were struck by a pickup traveling north just before 11 p.m.

Tibbetts said Monday he is working with officials on ways to improve safety at the intersection.
