Still the Lewiston aldermen do not meet. First it was Mayor Lemaire who didn’t care to call a meeting because the republican members of the board had orders that he didn’t want to see passed and so he didn’t call one. Now that the mayor wants a meeting, the republicans, with one of their number ill and unable to attend, don’t care to assemble at the call of the mayor until their full number is able to be present. The mayor won’t call a meeting until he is assured of republican attendance, it is understood, and this may not be for several days.

50 years ago, 1967
One hundred pounds of hot dogs, 18 cases of soda pop and 500 bags of pop corn were consumed yesterday as 400 youngsters participated in the final Auburn Parks and Recreation Department excursion for this year. The trip was an all-day stay at Thomas Point Beach. This was the sixth in a series of excursions — the others including Old Orchard Beach, Sebago, Bear Pond, Gray Animal Farm and Bradbury Mountain State Park. A rough estimate showed that nearly 2,500 youngsters attended the excursions.

Estimates on the average cost to taxpayers for the proposed $8 million elementary school have gone up by about 30 percent, Superintendent Rick Fenton told members of Auburn City Council Monday. Fenton said he had made a closer study of the costs of the proposed 20-year bond issue that citizens will vote on Sept. 16 and determined that the tax increase for a house assessed at $100,000 would be an average of $34.38 a year and not $25.49 a year as officials had earlier estimated.
