SOUTH PARIS – Vivian “Barney” Smith, 81, of Plymouth Avenue, Rumford, died Monday, May 9, at the Maine Veterans Home, South Paris.
She was born in Rumford, on Jan. 2, 1924, a daughter of Albert and Annette (Fournier) Lefebrve and attended local schools.
During World War II, she served as a PhM3c with the U.S. Navy. She had been an obstetrical nurse at the Osteopathic Hospital of Maine in Portland for five years until she married. She then was office assistant to her husband, Dr. R. Freeman Smith for many years.
She was a member of Napoleon Ouellette Post 24, American Legion and was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Osteopathic Hospital of Maine.
She was married in Machias on July 12, 1952, to Dr. R. Freeman Smith, who died in Rumford on Jan. 6, 1987.
Survivors include her sister, Lillian Mercier of Rumford; stepdaughter, Jane Dakin and husband, Donald, of Dixfield; two stepsons; and a nephew.
