LEWISTON — James “Jim” Howard Greene Jr., 74, of Ash Street, passed away at Central Maine Medical Center on Wednesday, Aug. 23, with his family at his side.

Jim was born in Malden, Mass. on Feb. 4, 1943, and spent his youth in Reading.

The son of the late James H. Sr. and Katherine O’Connor Greene, he graduated from Reading High School Class of 1961 and went on to proudly serve in the U.S. Air Force before attending the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

Jim worked for the Boston Public Library for over 35 years and was a walking encyclopedia of knowledge who taught himself to read Russian, Hebrew and Chinese. He loved reading, movies, all types of music, and spent his leisure time studying and discussing many religions, philosophies, languages and other things that fascinated him. He was a longtime resident of Cambridge, Mass. before retiring and moving to Lewiston in 2003, where he was a member of the local Elks Club and the Carlton Club, and had become a well-known member of the community.

Jim is survived by a son, Sean Greene and his wife Lisa, of Peabody, Mass.; two granddaughters, Julia Greene and Kayla Grove; and a sister, Lois Whalen of Westboro, Mass., all of whom will miss him immensely.
