FREEPORT (WGME) — State Police say a man was killed in a crash on I-295 in Freeport late Thursday night.
According to State Police Trooper Michael Smith, a van driven by Mark Fleming swerved to avoid a deer in the southbound lane near mile marker 22 and hitting a tractor-trailer. Both the van and tractor-trailer rolled into a ditch.
Trooper Smith says the tractor-trailer driver — a man in his 50s from Durham — died on the scene.
Fleming and his wife, who was a passenger in the van, were brought to Maine Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.
Trooper Smith says no charges have been filed, but the district attorney will review the case, as is standard procedure.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
