LEWISTON – Eugene H. Smith, 81, of Oxford, died peacefully Saturday evening at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center.
He was born in Auburn, Sept. 26, 1923, the son of George and Ida McKnight.
He attended schools in Auburn and Lewiston and faithfully served his country in the Army during World War II.
He had worked at Bath Iron Works, Robinson Woolen Mill, Diamond Match, Wilner Wood Products and as a carpenter belonging to the carpenters union. For over 40 years, he had been an antique dealer and operated Pigeon Hill Antiques. He loved to tell stories and always went for the laugh. He loved wood, working with it, chopping it and looking at it. He was always proud of his gardens and he was also an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved animals, little children and his family.
On Oct. 5, 1946, he married Jean L. Inman.
He is survived by his wife of Oxford; his children, and their spouses, Toni and Rod of Boothbay, Lisa and Jeff of South Portland, Becky of Litchfield, Kerry of Oxford, Brian of Lewiston, Mike of Norway, Glenn of South Paris, Diana and Stu of Oxford, Richard and Kathy of Albany; a nephew, Rikki of Massachusetts; 19 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
