FALMOUTH – Alexander McCracken, 83, of Falmouth, formerly of Portland and Auburn, died Wednesday, Nov. 24, at St. Joseph’s Manor after a long illness.
He was born Sept. 1, 1921, in North Monmouth, a son of Alexander and Ruby Moody McCracken. He attended Auburn schools, graduating from Edward Little High School in 1940. After high school, he studied at Northeastern University, receiving a degree in business administration.
In 1948, he married Beverly Jordan of Auburn, who passed away in 2002.
Mr. McCracken, known to many as “Mac,” held several accounting positions during his career. He worked as a public accountant at E.H. Griswold Co. and C.F. Rhittenhouse, both of Boston, and at Millet, Fish & Dresser Co. of Portland. He was an office manager for B. Peck Co. of Lewiston, and Lipman Poultry Co. in Augusta. From 1960 until his retirement in 1985, he was the controller of Sebago Inc. of Westbrook.
He was a cheerful, optimistic and dependable man. He loved animals, playing piano, travel, all kinds of sports and played in golf and bowling leagues both at work and at the Woodfords Club of Portland, where he was a member.
He had a life long interest in photography, having taken moving pictures since 1951 when his first child was born. In addition to the Woodfords Club, he was a member of the Portland Elks Club and Knights of Pythias, Piscataqua Lodge.
He attended the Falmouth Congregational Church, and volunteered audit services there for several years.
He is survived by a son, Stephen and his wife, Ruth, of Falmouth; a daughter, Elizabeth Dube and her husband, Richard, of Lewiston; two granddaughters, Carrie Luke of Lewiston, and Tracy Luke of Bangor; and a great-granddaughter, Brooklyn Kirkland of Bangor.
