LEWISTON – Donald E. Smith, 77, recently of New Gloucester, died early Sunday morning, Nov. 7, his second day at Ste. Marguerite D’Youville Pavilion in Lewiston where he was moved after struggling for several weeks with lung cancer.

He was born on April 20, 1927 in Vernon, Conn., and moved to the area in 1994 with Pauline Smith, maiden name Ayotte, born and raised on Grove Street, Lewiston.

Honorably discharged in June, 1959 from the U.S. Army, he served over twenty years as a Sergeant, First Class, receiving two letters of commendation for his service in both World War II and the Korean War.

Donald drew much pleasure and fulfillment from family and friends and will be remembered by those who loved him as patient, open-minded and generous-hearted. He had a particular passion for his grandchildren, Sarah and Benjamin, and most recently, his grand-daughter Joye. His great loves were his wife, his family, music, animals, and the great outdoors.

He is survived by his wife, Pauline, of New Gloucester; three stepchildren, Diane Macrina and husband, Joseph, of New Gloucester, Michele Lussier, of Seattle, Wash. and Paul Lussier, of New York City; a daughter, Susan Smith; son, Bob Smith; and two siblings, Bill Smith and Anne Jones, all of Connecticut.
