1927 – 2003
BRUNSWICK – Maurice J. Ouellette, 76, of Armory Street, died Sunday, Nov. 23, at his home, with his family by his side.
Born in Lisbon, July 28, 1927, the son of Albert Z. Sr. and Diana Harvey Ouellette, he graduated from St. John’s School.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. On June 18, 1949, he married Irene D. Labbe in Lewiston and they continued to make their home in Brunswick.
At the age of 16, he started driving buses for the family business, Brunswick Transportation. The local run included employee transportation for BIW. In 1976 he took over as president of the family business, which became known as Maine Line Bus Co. He served as president for 10 years, retiring in 1986 at the age of 59 due to illness. In 1996 he went back to work driving buses for Coach USA as a part-time driver until 2003. He also worked the last several years as a bus driver for the Freeport School System.
In his spare time he enjoyed family activities, which included snowmobiling, playing golf and spending time at the family cottage at Tacoma Lake in Litchfield. He also was a frequent visitor at the Knights of Columbus in the afternoon, where he loved to visit with friends and discuss the day’s events.
He was a communicant of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus and a member of the Brunswick Elks.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years; a son, Paul M. and his wife, Katharine Ouellette of Topsham; four daughters, Phyllis L. and her husband, Albert Lapierre of Topsham, Susan L. and her husband, Mark Ruska of Freeport, Sandra S. and her husband, John MacMillan of Brunswick and Sheila P. and her husband, Mathew Sudbay of Haverhill, Mass.; two brothers, Albert Z. Ouellette Jr. of Brunswick and Robert J. and his wife, Lynn Ouellette of Brunswick; two sisters, Pauline and her husband, Francis Drouin of Brunswick and Irene and her husband, Charles Dale of Marion, N.C.; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a brother, Raymond L. Ouellette, March 8, 1981; and a sister, Muriel J. Helie Sept. 18.
