1924 – 2003

TOGUS – Orville E. Libby, 78, a resident of South Monmouth and Lady Lake, Fla., died Thursday, Sept. 18, at the VA Nursing Home Facility following a long illness.

He was born in Turner on Oct. 11, 1924, the son of Joseph and Stella (Alden) Libby.

He was educated in Turner schools and attended Leavitt Institute. He served in the Air Corp during World War II where he was a radio operator on B-17 airplanes.

He and his crew were shot down by the enemy over Germany in April of 1944 and he was interned at Stalag XVII-B until May of 1945. He was wounded and received the Purple Heart.

In August of 1945 he married Gladys Bryant of Readfield. She passed away in December of 1972.

He worked for the U.S. Government Defense Department for 30 years as a Quality Assurance Representative, retiring in 1980.

In July of 1975 he married Pauline Pelletier Boilard of Lewiston.

He was a member of the American ex-prisoners of War, VFW, Florida Chapter 2, American Legion, Post 204 and the 306th Bomb Group. He was in the Air Force Reserve for many years.

He enjoyed his computer and was an avid chess player and bowler and also a Red Sox fan. He will be truly missed by his family and friends.

He leaves his wife of 28 years, Pauline of South Monmouth and Lady Lake, Fla.; three sons and their wives, David and Carol Libby of Monmouth, Dan and Judy Libby of Gray, Tenn., and Daniel Boilard; three daughters, Orva Smith and her companion John Appese of Lewiston, Lisa Rodrigues and her companion Andrew Asselin of Auburn and Diane Daigneault and her husband James of Lewiston; a brother, Alvin Libby and his wife Christine of Dover, N.H.; two sisters, Iris Kling of Orem, Utah, and Alice DeMoras and her husband John of Livermore; 18 grandchildren, Laurie Wilcox, Cami Wilbert, Todd and Ryan Johnson, Kelsi Smith, David, Derek and Chad and Kristen Libby, Angel Monroe, Heather Libby, Troy and Laura Minkowsky, Jamison Rodrigues, Kate and Daniel Boilard, Jonathan Paradis and Jenna Daigneault; 13 great-grandchildren, Christopher, Elizabeth, Jacob, Mytchell, Makayla, Baylie, Reed, Tessa, Nicholas, Alexis, Delilah, Stella and Jonathan.

He was predeceased by a brother, Hamlin Libby in 1995.
