1915 – 2003
FARMINGTON – Theodore “Ted” Ames, 87, of Farmington Falls, died Thursday afternoon, Aug. 21, at the Franklin Memorial Hospital.
He was born, Nov. 27, 1915, in New Sharon, a son of Warren S. and Florice (Gordon) Ames. He attended New Sharon schools graduating from New Sharon High School.
On Nov. 27, 1940, he married Elizabeth “Betty” Stetson in New Sharon. Mr. Ames worked at Gordon’s Lumber Mill in Farmington Falls for over 20 years.
He then worked at Backus Garage in Wilton for a short time before going to work at Maine Dowell Co. in Farmington where he retired from after 20 years of service in 1983.
In his retirement he continued working part time mowing cemeteries for the town of Farmington. He was a past member of the Hyawatha Grange in Farmington Falls. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, riding motorcycles, and mountain climbing.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 63 years; two sons, George W. and his wife Pearl of Winthrop and Edward T. Ames of Wilton; three daughters, Ina Louise Ames, Helen C. Smith and her husband Stan of Kenasaw, Ga., and Shirley M. Buzzell of Groveton, N.H.; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a brother, Donald Ames.
