1902 – 2003
NORWAY – Eleanor Brown Noble, 101, died at her home in Norway, Thursday, July 17.
Mrs. Noble was born on July 6, 1902, the daughter of Irvin E. Brown and Annie Walker Brown in Norway. She attended grade school in the Little School House at Norway Lake, graduating from Norway High School in 1920.
In the fall of 1920 she went to Gorham Normal School in Gorham. She taught intermediate school in Oxford for two years. In the summer of 1922 Mrs. Noble worked as a waitress at Poland Spring House, where by night she played the piano for silent movies at the Outdoor Pavilion. That fall she began a stenographic course at Bliss Business College in Lewiston.
By 1923 she was employed as a stenographer for Norway Shoe Co., owned by Henry Foster and Elmer Packard. On Nov. 22, 1924 she married Philip T. Noble. They raised three daughters, Phyllis Eleanor, Anne Chris, and Mary Evelyn. All graduated from Norway High School.
In 1954 the Nobles sold their home in Norway and moved to Raymond. Mrs. Noble kept the books for Raymond Machine Co. until she retired in 1966. In 1988 Mr. and Mrs. Noble returned to Norway and bought a home on Huntington Avenue.
Mrs. Noble is survived by her two daughters, Phyllis “Penny” Tucker of Waterford and Mary Rand Bowler of Hampden; six grandchildren, Janne P. Provencher of Wilsons Mills, Chris P. Hoskinson of Anchorage, AK., Jeffrey N. Tucker of Waterford, Gleason A. Rand III of Allston, Mass.., Stephen P. Rand of Culver City, Calif., and Kimberly T. Sacco of Underhill, Vt.; 10 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Noble was predeceased by her husband Philip T. Noble; and a daughter, Anne C. Penny.
