1924 – 2003
YARMOUTH – Robert N. MacKinnon Sr., 78, of Smith Street, died on July 9, at Coastal Manor.
Born in South Portland, July 14, 1924, a son of Edward G. and Karin E. Nelson MacKinnon, Bob grew up in Yarmouth and attended local schools.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy, where he was on the U.S.S. Windsor throughout the Pacific. Two years ago, he attended a reunion for the people he served with.
For 33 years, he worked at St. Johnsbury Trucking Co., formerly in Scarborough. For many years, he was a trustee and treasurer for the Riverside Cemetery in Yarmouth. “Bob” was a direct descendant of the first settlers of Yarmouth. His family came from Plymouth and settled on the property in which Riverside Cemetery and his home sits.
A member of the First Parish Church in Yarmouth, he was a former deacon of the church, a Sunday school teacher and also sang in the choir. He loved the ocean and enjoyed being around the waterfront. Earlier in life, he helped support his family by clamming and lobstering in addition to his full-time job.
He was a Mason and was proud of having raised one of his sons as a Mason. He had an insatiable hunger for knowledge and was an avid reader, which he passed along to his children. “He was a friend to all that knew him” said a family member, “he will be sadly missed”.
Survivors include his wife of over 50 years, Ruth E. Chamberlain MacKinnon of Yarmouth; three sons, David R. MacKinnon, Ret. Capt. U.S. Navy, of El Cajon, Calif., Robert N. MacKinnon Jr.of Yarmouth and William E. MacKinnon of Minot; two sisters, Betty Street of Windham and Barbara Dusenberry of Greenfield, Mass.; and eight grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his daughter, Judith A. Ustic; his son-in-law, Edward J. Ustic; and a brother, Stuart MacKinnon.
