AUBURN — Lawrence “Red” or more currently to some “Whitey” Hodges, 88, formerly a resident of Monmouth, passed away at Bolster Heights Health Care on Wednesday, Sept. 13, after a long fight with cancer.
He was born in Winthrop on Oct. 4, 1917, to the late Daisy and Merton Hodges. He attended Winthrop High School, Hebron Academy and Syracuse University.
He married the former Ruth Smith of Newport, Vt., and they raised three daughters on their large farm in Monmouth.
He was employed by H.P. Hood & Sons, Globe Albany, and Inmont Corp. in Winthrop, retiring from Inmont in 1975.
He was a member of the Monmouth Lions and Litchfield Lions. His hard work on behalf of the Maine Sight & Hearing Project helped many, and he had a lifetime membership from Lions International.
He is survived by his three daughters, Judy Rose of Lewiston, Joan Withee of Cromwell, Conn. and Jane Poulin and husband, Gary, of Newport News, Va.; his eight grandchildren, Kristen McBride and husband, Michael, Heather Pinard and husband, Tom, Jennifer Rose, Deborah Zahacefski and husband, Ron, Karen Gum and husband, Bobby, Paul Withee Jr. and wife, Mary Jo and Eric and Ginger Poulin; and his 12 great grandchildren.
