AUBURN – Berta Singer Young, 89, formerly of 143 Mill St., Barker Mill Arms Apartments, Auburn died Saturday, Sept 9, at Clover Health Care with her loving family by her side.
She was born in Somersworth, N.H., May 31, 1917, the daughter of Hallam and Florida (Rainville) Singer. She grew up in South Portland attending South Portland schools and was a 1936 graduate of South Portland High School.
Since moving to Auburn in the late 1960s, she had been employed with the Cooperative Extension Service of the University of Maine System until her retirement in 1985. After her retirement, she was an avid reader, and also was a volunteer librarian at the Barker Mill Arms Extension of the Auburn Public Library for a number of years.
Survivors include one daughter, Judy A. Sanderson and her husband, Andrew, of Auburn; two sisters, Lennie Butler of Auburn and Janice Shanahan of Naples; one beloved granddaughter, Deborah Shaw of South Portland; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, George E. Young; one daughter, Georgia Ann Shaw; and two brothers, Hallam Singer Jr. and George Olsen.
