Maine took another step forward last week in its efforts to integrate its two postsecondary education systems.

Beginning with the Class of 2005, students who complete an associate’s degree at a Maine community college will be guaranteed admission into University of Maine System schools.

While the change will help community colleges meet their goals of sending students on to get four-year degrees, the biggest winners will be the students, who will be able to avoid much of the paperwork, fees and bureaucratic hassles traditionally associated with applying for college admissions.

The announcement, which was made by Gov. Baldacci last week, enhances cooperation between the two systems and furthers the goal of creating a seamless education system that begins in kindergarten and continues through a four-year college degree.

Students embarking on their college careers should rejoice that at least part of the process will be a lot easier.
