TOWNSHIP E — Searchers riding all-terrain vehicles found an
88-year-old Brewer man late Sunday night in an unorganized township near Byron.
Arthur Babineau, reported missing by his family late Sunday afternoon, was found safe and unharmed at 11:30 p.m. He
“got turned around” and lost while fishing on the Swift River,
according to a Maine Warden Service report Monday morning.
Warden Sgt. Tim Place said Babineau traveled
more than 1½ miles, mostly in a ravine, to a spot that was half a
mile from where he was last seen by relatives.
Babineau, a former military medic who is in excellent
physical condition, told wardens that he made himself a bed with pine
boughs. He had planned to sleep in the woods and head back to his
family’s camp site in the morning.
That’s when he heard two ATVs and went
to flag them down, but they already had driven past him. However, the
riders made a return trip, and he got their attention.
Babineau told wardens that the Byron area is one of
his favorite places to fish, and that he’s been going to the Swift
River area for more than 40 years.
The Maine Warden Service was assisted by numerous
volunteers.
