BRUNSWICK — What was hoped to be an opportunity to tie Friday’s game became just another moment of futility for the Oxford Hills football team.

A 75-yard kickoff return by Nate Dubois, put Oxford Hills at the 5-yard line. Oxford Hills offense went nowhere, however, and was stuffed on three run attempts and one pass play. It was a prime example of the Vikings offensive woes in a 42-8 Brunswick victory.

“We’re a little undersized on the line,” Vikings coach Nate Danforth said. “I thought we could deal with it with our quickness, but they physically pounded us on the line of scrimmage. We couldn’t answer. When we got outside, their skill players were right there, too. They’re a real good defensive football team.”

The Vikings were held to 84 total yards and five first downs. Brunswick, meanwhile, churned out 281 yards on the ground and threw for another 175. Oxford Hills trailed 21-0 at halftime after netting just 16 total yards in the half.

“They had an answer for everything we tried,” Danforth said. “We couldn’t even pass because we couldn’t block anybody. We are undersized, and the guys tried. They weren’t giving up.”

Jeremy Diaz led the Dragons (6-1) with 103 yards on the ground on 12 carries and a touchdown. Quarterback Stephan Jenson threw two touchdown passes and ran for another. Rashon Edgerton caught the two touchdown passes, rushed for another and added 56 yards rushing on nine carries.

“We feel we have a lot of weapons,” said Brunswick coach Dan Cooper. “We wanted to spread it around tonight.”

The Vikings got 61 yards rushing on five carries and a touchdown from Francis Rodman.

After Brunswick stuffed the Vikings on their first possession, the Dragons marched down field and scored on a Jenson plunge from the 1. Dubois’ kickoff return set the Vikings up with a chance to tie the game, but the opportunity was squandered at the 5.

“It was easy calling plays tonight with the defense playing that well,” Cooper said. “A lot of guys played really well tonight defensively.”

The Dragons used another lengthy drive to make it 14-0 when Diaz burst through the left side for a six-yard run. Brunswick added another score with 5:31 left in the half when Jenson hit a wide open Edgerton on a five-yard pass play.

“We’ve got a good physical line, and they played well tonight,” Cooper said. “We didn’t take Oxford Hills lightly. We’ve done that the last couple weeks. We didn’t come out with the sense of urgency like a championship team does. We did that tonight.”

Brunswick opened the second half with a drive that Edgerton finished off from the 1. Jenson hit Edgerton later in the quarter on a 15-yard pass play for the 34-0 lead. The Dragons added a Teague Smith four-yard run early in the fourth.

The Vikings (1-6) got its lone score with 4:40 left when Rodman scored on an 8-yard run.

“There were open holes, but they were closing fast,” Danforth said. “We couldn’t get into the holes quick enough. It’s a tribute to Brunswick. They’re a good defensive team.”
