I write in response to Rep. Brian’s Bolduc’s March 8 article “Restore Franco History in Maine.” I support LD 422 as a Franco-American and as a citizen.

Contrary to what detractors might say, this bill does not mandate extra courses or subjects. It simply acknowledges Franco-Americans as a part of U.S. history and life.

In fact, the Maine Learning Results for history already ask students to “demonstrate an awareness of … Who lives here? And how did they get here? (immigrants, demographics, ethnic and religious groups).” Franco-Americans live here, as do other groups. People can view the document for themselves on the state Web site.

Similarly, this bill in no way diminishes the contributions of other ethnic groups to area culture. The more that Maine children learn about the state’s different populations – including Franco-Americans – the better-informed citizens they will be.
