This is in response to the article printed Jan. 18 about the proposed cuts in funding for school athletics. I see nothing wrong with athletics and think they are a great asset to a student’s high school experience. But the cuts are not unprecedented. At my school, the budget has been frozen for two years, meaning that we don’t have everything we need in our classes.
Athletic programs get a lot more monetary support than many other groups. I am a member of the student council. Our group has absolutely no place in the school budget (neither do most of the other extracurricular activities). We request a bus once a year to attend a conference. We are required to pay almost $600 for the bus, as well as all the conference expenses.
Athletic programs do very little fundraising, and are in the school budget, while other groups have to raise all their money. One of the groups spends the whole year fundraising for their one conference.
It is horrible that athletes may have season cuts, but they are not the only group suffering, and, in comparison, they have had it quite good.
