This is in response to the article printed Jan. 2 about the ice-chopping victim, Gary St. Hilaire. I was shocked and appalled to read the last paragraph about the prison sentence for the attacker, Luke Blair.

St. Hilaire is a bold and courageous man who has, sadly, received a “life” sentence at the hands of Blair.

What shocks me the most is how the scales of justice have become so badly broken and maligned that Blair will, after three short years, be free to run, jump, work, play and, yes, even walk, for the rest of his life. Mr. St. Hilaire, however, will struggle to perform even the simplest of tasks each and every minute of each and every day for the rest of his life.

Blair will live in a heated prison and be served three meals a day. He will have access to a weight room, television, free medical care, and ultimately struggle only with the final paperwork to let him “walk” after he has paid his “debt” to society.

My hope is that the lawmakers in Augusta will, for just a moment, examine, repair and recalibrate the obviously old and broken scales of justice.

May God bless St. Hilaire and his loved ones.
