I appreciate the support of voters of New Gloucester, Durham and Lisbon for the opportunity to serve them in the Maine House of Representatives. I’m grateful for their confidence in my ability to make a difference during these difficult times.
Last week, House Speaker Hannah Pingree announced my inclusion on the Joint Standing Committee on Utilities and Energy. This is an excellent fit for my background in energy and natural resources. As a member, I’m interested in promoting renewable energy development, community-scale wind power, and investments in energy conservation.
The deadline for bills to be proposed in this session is Jan. 16. While it is important to keep the number of new bills to a minimum, it is our job to propose changes to Maine law to benefit the people of our state.
I want to hear what constituents believe are the highest priorities for new legislation. I am currently considering what bills I may wish to sponsor or co-sponsor, and welcome input.
This session promises to be challenging. The terrible economic recession will require major restructuring of many government programs. While this will be politically and economically difficult, it is a major opportunity to rethink priorities, and retool how government works.
Even in these tough times, we need to think about essential investments that will boost our economy in the short and long-term.
As the session goes on, I will update my Web site, www.davidvanwie2008.com, to provide information on legislation I am supporting.
Rep. David A. Van Wie, New Gloucester
