I’ve never really understood what makes most Republicans tick. It feels like all I’ve ever heard from them is “No new taxes,” “Lower taxes,” “Smaller government, so I don’t have to pay so much in taxes,” and so on. It seems to me that many Republicans are also Christians, as I am. They go to church and discuss concepts such as “Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s,” and “Whatever you do to the least of my brothers you do to me.” Then they leave church and all that goes out the window.

I subscribe to the Sun Journal, but also spend time reading the online version, primarily so that I can read and contribute to the comment sections. In recent months, whenever there was a campaign story, the comment section would be rife with hatred and prejudice. It was common to see comments that were racist, anti-Muslim, anti-poor. I was saddened throughout the campaign by the mindset of some of my fellow Sun Journal readers and fellow Americans across the country.

I am excited that Barack Obama will be the next president. For the first time in eight years, I feel at peace with my country. I’m proud of the majority, which included some Republicans, for voting the way they did. I feel hopeful about the future. However, after going through that campaign, seeing the true colors of many Americans leaves a bitter taste in my mouth.
