On Sept. 6, my wife and I were traveling on Route 122 toward Auburn. As we approached our right-hand turn onto Bald Hill Road, I signaled, slowed and moved to the right. Just at that moment, a tractor-trailer came upon us from the opposite direction. It was more than halfway over the centerline and appeared to be out of control. I was only able to avoid a head-on collision by sharply turning to the right. By a stroke of luck, I got far enough over to avoid the collision and stay on the road where it widened for the turn.

Had we been traveling straight or, worse, turning left, a collision would have occurred. The vehicle following at a normally safe distance behind me would also have been involved. I was driving a full-size sedan with front and side air bags. We were wearing seatbelts.

At that truck’s speed, that protection would not have helped.

I could not identify the truck or its driver. The incident was over in seconds. I turned onto Bald Hill Road and continued my trip after calming down. The cab of the truck was blue. That is the only ID I have. I hope the driver sees this letter and changes his ways. If not, there will be fatalities.

After this experience, as well as prior history of traffic accidents on this road, I will look for alternate routes to avoid it. I urge law enforcement to do something now about this.
