There has been lots of misinformation circulating about the impact the SAD 52 school budget will have on the taxes of Greene residents this year.
According to the latest report from our selectmen, the mill rate will increase approximately $1. This will mean an increase of about $100 on a home valued at $100,000.
Three union contracts were negotiated, heating oil and diesel prices continue to climb, state funding was slashed dramatically and the cost of supplies has risen. In a year where everything keeps going up, thanks to our economy, this is not, in my opinion, an unrealistic increase in property taxes due to the school budget.
I do not agree with every cut the school board made, but I will support the budget as it stands. Tough choices had to be made, and I wouldn’t trade places with any school board member. I would like to extend my personal appreciation to all the board members and administrators for giving their time and dedication to find what they believe is the best-case scenario for all of our students.
Please join me in voting “yes” on the SAD 52 school budget on June 10, at the Greene Volunteer Fire Department from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m.
Brenda Theriault, Greene
