I am disappointed in the people of Canton. Of those who voted regarding Village Ridge, most made their decision based on fear of change. Those who didn’t vote, just couldn’t be bothered to care.

Why would anyone want to vote down the last step of this project? It was going to provide quality housing and a new center in Canton. It would create a new neighborhood. It would have invited in new and diverse people to our community.

Perhaps money was an issue. If voters read the mailing that arrived the morning of the vote, they would have known that the cost of paying back the loans would not have burdened the current tax base. Taxes would not rise because of the project. If voters had gone to any of the meetings on the project, they would have known that.

There are some people in Canton who believe that since they have lived here forever, they have the town’s best interests at heart. I’ve lived in town for 20 years, and I’m as proud to live there as any of the old-timers are. That is why I find it so hard to believe that any of them would be against the project. I believe it is what’s best for Canton.

A majority have decided that we all must wash our hands of it. We’ll have to see what becomes of it now.

I had confidence in the project. If only others had, too.
