I recently read “Six years later, we’re not safe enough’ (Sept. 6). It has been six years since the horrible tragedy on 9/11. The question we’re still asking is, “Are we safe enough?”

Some say we have come a long way, but according to a report assessing the U.S. government’s progress on the bipartisan recommendations from the 9/11 Commission, it was concluded the nation is not safe enough.

I agree. We have become more cautious and protective at airports, but we need to improve. With the technology and weaponry we have today, I am surprised we still haven’t changed our security systems. An advance baggage-screening system won’t be in place until 2024. That is too far in our future.

That bagging-screening-sytem needs to happen within the next five years. Beyond the war in Iraq, we need to ensure war won’t begin here and have suicide bombs on American streets.

The solution is clear. We need to wake up and notice this problem. We cannot have war begin here and have another 9/11 tragedy. We need to make sure we have the best security system possible. We need to make sure our airports are secure and not let high profile terrorists into this country.

Someone with high authority, like President Bush, needs to not only state this problem, but take action. This cannot be another solution which goes unfinished until ten years later. This needs to start now and finish as soon as possible.
