I attended the School Committee meeting in Auburn on April 24. I commend Ray Berube for his suggestions for resolving the school budget issues. I believe that a good many in that room know deep down that Berube is right – that $328,046 in fat can, and should, be trimmed before any talk of raising my already exorbitant taxes.
Berube clearly does not want to see any schools closed in Auburn. That is why he offered his list of proposed solutions to the budget problem, including $261,945 in savings by eliminating elementary guidance counselors alone.
If memory serves, there were no guidance counselors in elementary school when I was a boy. Why on earth would an elementary school child need to talk with a guidance counselor? Isn’t that the job of parents? To provide guidance for their child?
I say, make the suggested cuts – and get back to work.
