After three juveniles allegedly went on a vandalism spree at the Mechanic Falls Library, people in this small community became very upset. They could not believe that anyone would do such a thing.

Townspeople offered help in many ways, from helping with the cleanup to cash donations.

Then, on a recent Saturday night, I witnessed something that made me feel proud to be part of this town. The American Legion, which has a good-sized post here, offered to put on a supper to benefit the library. The supper lasted for only an hour and a half, but during that time, there was not an empty seat in the hall. People came out in droves, young and old.

The fire department had members there, helping with food and dishes; the town manager and his wife were there; the principal from the elementary school was there; town councilmen were there; Legion members, Sons of the American Legion members, ladies auxiliary members, town employees and many taxpayers were all there.

There were also people from surrounding towns there, showing their support.

It just goes to show, even though people in small towns may not see others all the time, when a crisis happens, people come together and make big things happen.

Everyone who helped out with the fundraiser, or who came and gave their money for the library, can take pride in what they did, and be proud of their part in this small community.

I know that I am.
