Unfortunately, domestic violence has had a prominent place in the news lately. I wish that were not the case, but it is important that we be able to have discussions about this uncomfortable topic in our communities.

Domestic violence occurs daily in Maine – some say every 97 minutes – but for the most part is hidden, with victims suffering in silence. Domestic violence programs need more help in providing support for women and children in the form of shelters, court advocacy, hotlines, support groups and community outreach.

In the previous legislative session, Rep. Carol Grose of Woolwich attempted a step in the right direction. She sponsored a bill, L.D. 182: An Act To Provide Funding To Domestic Violence Shelters, but it did not pass. All it required was $1 be added to the marriage license fee in Maine, for distribution to domestic violence shelters.

One dollar is very little to ask for. The license fee should be raised by $2, or even more (it is, hopefully, a one-time commitment). I also propose it not be earmarked specifically for shelters, but available for the other equally important services that domestic violence programs offer.

Legislators need to reconsider that bill, so that victims of domestic violence have the support to become survivors.
