The article on Oxford Aviation by Rebecca Goldfine (Nov. 20) was interesting, but I think it begs a question.
Perhaps the Sun Journal can delve into why Oxford Aviation decided to relocate to Sanford Airport, when Auburn-Lewiston Municipal Airport is just a few miles away. Any aircraft that can land at Sanford can also be accommodated at in Auburn.
I know the reason has to do with the financial incentive package Sanford’s offering, but that does not tell me why that package (or something equivalent) was not offered by the Twin Cities. I think a couple of hundred good-paying jobs would be welcome here. The airport is a valuable asset for this community that is currently an underperforming asset that needs to be developed to acheive it full potential.
Oxford Aviation would be a natural fit. That company has outgrown its present location. Oxford Aviation serves the fastest-growing sector of the aviation industry: business aircraft, including small jets. As they continue to grow with that sector, other businesses will develop. For example; Oxford Aviation refurbishes airframes inside and out. They also do avionics, but they do not do power plants.
It will not be long before Oxford, or another entreprenuerial company, moves in to service the engines of those same aircraft. My concern is that L/A may have missed an opportunity.
I would like to see that story told.
Milton Ayer, Sanford
