One off-year election in a decade goes her way and suddenly Diana Lovejoy (Nov. 19) is demanding that the new majority seek bloody vengeance against the current administration. While attempting to flesh out her disjointed rant with Riefenstahl-worthy imagery and in-vogue liberal buzz words such as “cabal” (used twice) and “hubris,” not even fellow left-wingers “Screaming Howard Dean” or Nancy Pelosi have joined her in her call for impeaching the “illegitimate” president and vice president.
Not surprisingly, Ms. Lovejoy hypocritically chooses to ignore the results of elections like 2004 yet somehow sees a sweeping mandate in this one. Leading Democrats have already come forward to say they understand any chance they might have to succeed in the next real election in 2008 will depend upon their ability to offer solutions in the next two years, rather than simply whine about perceived Republican missteps.
Further, since the small majority enjoyed by the Democrats is hardly veto proof, the immediate choices for both sides are either reluctant cooperation on limited areas of agreement or unproductive gridlock. The best way to ensure that this month’s elections were just a blip on the Republicans’ years of dominance is for the Democrats to listen to Ms. Lovejoy and fritter away their time exacting their “revenge.”
This will guarantee one will be more likely to see a horned Minot wolf-dog than a Democrat as president in 2008.
