I woke up Sunday morning, Nov. 12, just not feeling right. I put my shoes on the wrong feet and couldn’t figure out how to make my toast. Believe it or not, I even drove to the Sabattus Market backwards.
It wasn’t until I read the newspaper that I realized what my problem was. I found out that I’m “not that bright” and “backwards.” Chris Bisson of Mechanic Falls claimed in his letter (Nov. 12) that a vote for Gov. John Baldacci and against the Taxpayer Bill of Rights meant Mainers are “not that bright.” Lee Clifford of Sabattus wrote Maine people are thought to be backward (he didn’t say by whom).
Thanks to them, I now know what is ailing me.
Perhaps Gov. Baldacci’s policies and values are not in tune with those of Bisson. Maybe TABOR would have been good for Clifford, his family and the town of Sabattus, although I think TABOR would have crippled the town.
One reason Gov. Baldacci won and TABOR failed to pass was because advocates of TABOR, and those against Gov. Baldacci, still have little to offer other than name-calling.
Maine may not be the right fit for everyone. Some may not want to live in a state that welcomes people regardless of color, sexual orientation or socioeconomic background. Most of us feel blessed to live in the great state of Maine.
I guess that’s my backward, not-too-bright way of thinking.
William Fessenden, Sabattus
