I am so unimpressed with how we allow candidates running for public office to litter every possible square inch of green space with their campaign signs.
Please, somebody, take a ride around any one of our fair cities and towns and notice the clutter rising out of the ground. Doesn’t anybody besides me see the big, fat waste of these eyesores? On the way out of Auburn via Washington Street, there is one little island perhaps 10 feet long. and I am certain there are 50 signs all in a row. Does a candidate really believe that cars speeding by at 55 mph are actually going to pick a name out of that debris?
Give me a break.
I don’t even want to know the costs associated with this blight, but I am certain that, collectively, it’s a pretty penny. The candidates are so anxious to get their name out there, they will spend tons of man-hours orchestrating a signage assault on constituents, and they won’t even blink an eye.
If candidates want to put up a sign, here’s an idea: take all that campaign money and all of those man-hours and put up a house for Habitat for Humanity. When it’s done, the candidate could place a sign that says “Built by the campaign contributions of (name here).” Now, there’s a sign.
