For several years, I have attempted to obtain information on where, and how much, has been spent on the Megabucks lottery by our citizens.

When everyone received a free ticket in the mail, it was to help education in the state of Maine. Now, years later, I count 12 different types of tickets behind the service counter of my local food store, priced from $1 to $20. In a large machine in front of that counter are 6 more types of tickets priced from $1 to $20. Then there are the Pick 3, Pick 4, Powerball and the slot machines in Bangor.

Several members of the Maine Legislature failed to provide me with any information. I have also called the Sun Journal and asked to speak with a legislative reporter. Another dead end.

Recently, I was told by what I believe is a reliable source that the revenue goes into the state’s General Fund. That would be a huge mistake. The General Fund is nothing but a slush fund. Members of the Legislature can use it for whatever they need.

I want a full account of where and how the revenue from the various lotteries has been spent, from the beginning, including the salaries for workers taking care of the program. Where did the money go? And how much did the state’s schools receive?
