There are those in town and city government who do not want the Taxpayer Bill of Rights to pass for the simple reason they will have to stay within their municipal budgets. That, and taxpayers will have more say in how tax money is spent.

Officials in Lewiston have figured a way to make up any shortfalls if TABOR passes – charge a new fee. According to the Oct. 3 Sun Journal, the Lewiston City Council has OK’d the rainwater runoff fee, starting with a $30 fee for single family dwelling and a $45 charge for duplexes, two-unit residences and so on.

That sounds to me like a charge for water that runs off a person’s house and into the city streets and sewer. It is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard of. What do regular taxes pay for?

The reason that officials in town and city government don’t want TABOR to pass is because they will lose control of spending. What’s next – a fee if a person’s driveway touches the city street?

There is always someone in government up all night trying to figure out how to get more money from the taxpayers. Enough already.
