This letter is in response to Michael Milbury’s letter (Oct. 1) that called the sex offender registry “as protective as a guard dog without teeth.”
His claim that, “The registry is just the politicians’ way of making us think we are safer,” is valid, but seems misinformed. In most cases, rehabilitation is not an option.
Milbury also stated he felt “One should be allowed to move on after their sentence is served. The registry is a life sentence.” Again, I disagree with that statement.
Where is the protection for the children? A few years in prison for the guilty party is the greatest form of injustice that is done upon these innocent children. Their lives will never be the same. Most of them have a hard time readjusting into society, or ever trusting anyone again.
The idea of someone being more worried about the offender instead of the victim makes me think perhaps people don’t know the facts.
The registry is a way for people to be informed, and knowledge is power.
