Of the recent changes made to the Sunday edition of the Sun Journal, none is more disturbing than the moving of Perspective to the back page of the Maine section. Other than delivering local news, I cannot think of a more important function of a newspaper than drawing readers into the debate over state, national and international issues.
I believe that editorials, letters to the editor, editorial cartoons and opinion columns deserve a full section of the newspaper.
My biggest disappointment is the removal of the “Connecting with Congress” feature. It told us how our senators and representatives voted on legislation during the preceding week. On Sunday, Sept. 24, I was pleased to see the return of the smiling faces of our Maine delegation, but this was apparently only to fill space, for no article accompanied the contact information. A search of The Washington Post Votes Database showed that both the Senate and the House of Representatives voted during the preceding week.
Connecting with Congress was a great service to your readers, so it is a great disservice to take it away.
