Where is all this going to lead? Violence begets violence. If we keep this up, we all will be dead.
During the height of the Cold War, we began to talk about Graduated Reciprocation in Tension-reduction (GRIT).
A series of actions – six steps – designed to reduce tension without jeopardizing our defense posture would be announced in advance and then carried out. If there was no evidence of reciprocation on the part of our enemy, six more steps would be announced and carried out. This would be done as long as necessary to evoke some constructive response.
You say, “But this would not work with terrorists.” How do we know? It would be better to try this than to keep heading for the most unimaginable war.
