The editorial about Mexico on July 15 mentioned that the town of Poland was named after the country. That is not what I have read.
A gazetteer of the state of Maine by George Varney from 1886 states that Poland was named after an Indian chief named Polan.
Meanwhile, the town office history states that the name was given by Moses Emery, a founder, after the old hymn tune titled “Poland.”
