Jonathan Albrecht generates valid points to his interpretation of TABOR (July 2).
In its present form, TABOR is a disaster hanging over our heads like the sword of Damocles. Nonetheless, I and many others will vote for its passage. There are no alternatives left to rein in the spendthrift bureaucrats sitting in Augusta and city halls throughout our state. Despite ominous indicators of taxpayer revolts, officials on every level remain deaf, dumb and blind to the plight of Maine’s people.
Boasting the highest taxation rates in the country, Maine’s per capita income remains among the lowest in the nation. Regardless of silver-tongued political proclamations to the contrary, Maine’s economy festers at the bottom of the pile.
Asinine revaluations, based on artificially inflated values, ensure that Mainers can no longer afford to buy or keep their homes. Decent jobs, paying a living wage with a modicum of family benefits, remain unattainable dreams for multitudes, leading to ridiculous studies to determine why our young people leave Maine.
Family budgets are bankrupt! What part of that statement escapes political brain matter?
When political agendas exceed the means of its citizens, revolution is inevitable.
TABOR support grows daily. It may bring us to our knees; however, drastic steps are sometimes necessary to overcome apathy. Whether it passes, it is a shot fired in anger, a warning to politicians that, someday soon, Maine taxpayers will reclaim their democratic heritage and cry out: “Enough already! We are in charge!”
